Confession #2.

I’ve compiled a long list of fellow webloggers in my AIM buddy list, but I never chat with any of them. I’m way too self-conscious about my slow typing speed and lack of witty repartee to ever engage any of them in coversation.

Confession.

Since a lot of webloggers are writing in response to Jonno’s post about the number of sexual partners he’s had (prompted by a repeat of Will & Grace), I figured I would do the same.

The number of people I’ve gotten hot and heavy with is still in the single digits. And it’s nearing the 2-year mark since I’ve had any type of physical contact with another person. Even if I lived in a big city instead of the middle of rural Missouri, I doubt things would be much different.

Finally saw the Lord of the Rings today. Meh. I never even managed to read through The Hobbit. Still, the film was engaging and didn’t seem like 3 hours.

I like sci-fi, but I’ve never been the biggest fan of fantasy. Still, I wouldn’t mind seeing a film version of the one series I enjoyed reading, David Eddings’ The Belgariad.

Speaking of sci-fi, the preview for The Time Machine was pretty cool. Any trailer for a film that works in an Andrew Lloyd Weber joke is okay with me, even if it’s delivered by the obnoxious Orlando Jones.

Like Max (who still doesn’t have permalinks, dammit!), I love NPR’s Marketplace. But in addition to the great financial news understandable to laymen like myself and David Brancaccio’s soothing voice, I dig the opening theme. You’ve got to admire the hubris of intertwining corporate sponsor GE‘s ad jingle into the music.

Speaking of other bloggers, Bill has a spanky new design. He’s gone retro like me and abandoned the CSS-only formatting model and returned to using tables. No shame, Bill — CSS is damn frustrating.

I’m not usually cognizant of tactile memories, but nothing makes me feel more at home (even though my parents have moved twice since I left for college) than the comforting heft and balance of my family’s old daily-use flatware. My brother Gary and I have already fought about who will get the set after our parents pass.

I got curious today and tried to figure out what pattern they are — they’re marked Utica Stainless, but replacements.com doesn’t have images for the different patterns, so I’m going to have to send them a picture so they can identify it for me.

Series 7: The Contenders

Series 7: The Contenders. A mock-reality show where the contestants hunt and kill each other (available for rental, but not purchase yet). Violent and perversely humorous, it’s much more intelligent than you’d think (watch the trailer).

Monsanto Hid Decades Of Pollution in Alabama town. And my students from St. Louis don’t believe me when I rant about what an evil company Monsanto is.

None of them has read Jonathan Kozol’s classic, Savage Inequalities (excerpt). They don’t know that it happened not far from where they grew up (in East St. Louis), and now I know it also happened not far from where I grew up (in Anniston, AL).

New Year’s Resolution.

It’s a cliche — but I want to lose some weight this year. Or, more accurately, I want to be able to fit into my pants again.

After moving to an apartment on the first floor of my new building this past summer, I’ve gained about 20 pounds simply through no longer climbing stairs. So my new mantra is “move more, eat less.”
