Hit or Miss

After my bizarre community theatre experience last year, I’m all set to audition on Wednesday for this summer’s musical: Guys & Dolls. I don’t think I’ll have a casting dilemma like last summer in Grease, so now I just have to figure out which part to audition for…

the suave Sky Masterson or the comic Nathan Detroit?

I’d really love to play Nicely-Nicely and belt out Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat, but I’m under the impression the role is designed to be played by a portly man (which despite my recent weight gains, I am not). I grew up listening to the uptempo, disco-influenced 1976 all-black revival recording, so my singing of any role will be probably be quite different from anyone only familiar with the depressingly white-bread original cast recording.

I figure I can fudge the vocal ranges of just about all the male characters, so now I just have to pick out an audition song that’s in a similar vein. Any suggestions?
