Sondheim’s GROUNDHOG DAY?
Sondheim’s GROUNDHOG DAY? Sondheim is reportedly trying to secure the rights to make a musical out of the Bill Murray comedy GROUNDHOG DAY. At first it seems like a highly unlikely enterprise; but when I think about how Sondheim pushed the musical form with his progressively developing melodies in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE and modular refrains and verses in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, I can’t imagine anyone more up to the task of composing a score of themes and variations representing a never-ending day. But can Sondheim write a contemporary-sounding score?
