The Times They Are A-Changin’
Jeff and I just got back from the first preview of The Times They Are A-Changin’, the new musical using Bob Dylan’s songs and directed by Twyla Tharp (Movin’ Out). According to the production website, the show is an “action-adventure fable” which “tel[s]l the story of young man, Coyote, and his attempt to break away from his father, Capt. Ah Rab, and his father’s traveling circus,” using “Tharp’s traditional no-holds-barred style, incorporates everything from trampolines, stilts, skateboards and rope tricks.”
Well, Tharp has rescued a show from a troubled preview period before, so maybe she’ll work her magic again; because what’s on stage right now doesn’t really make a lot of sense. At least Michael Arden sings pretty. But somehow I can’t imagine choral arrangements of “Blowin’ in the Wind” appealing to Dylan’s core fans.
