I’m a big fan of remembering which way the subway left as I walk up to the surface. Those “Northeast corner of so-and-so” signs are the exception rathr than the rule, I feel.
Also the neighborhood maps by the token booth help when the streets aren’t numbered. If you know what streets you should pass through on your way to your destination, it always is a confidence booster.
