Grey Gardens
I don’t know why it took me so long to finally see a show at Playwrights Horizons. Growing up, I revered Playwrights Horizons as the mythical birthing place of so many beautiful and challenging musicals, like March of the Falsettos, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, and Floyd Collins, among others.
Jeff and I went there on Thursday to see new musical version of Grey Gardens. Yes, it’s an unlikely subject for a musical, but that’s never stopped people. The show wasn’t perfect, but Christine Ebersole’s performance was truly shattering (I was only a few feet from her front row center). You can hear some of the music (minus Bruce Coughlin‘s superb orchestrations) here.
