Movin’ on up

Hit or Miss

Movin’ on up

After working at the New School for the past 4+ years, I’m finally movin’ on (up to the West Side). Starting November 1st, I will be the Associate Director of Housing Operations at Barnard College.

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to focus on the parts of working in college housing that interest and challenge me, but I’m going to miss having my own RA staff and residents (and all the great people I work with at the New School).

One result of the job change is that Jeff and I will be moving out of our apartment (which came with my job at the New School). We’ve got a temporary location to live in while we search, but we need to find a new apartment (something I’ve never done in my life, since I went straight from undergrad to grad school to working as a dorm director). Jeff commutes out to Newark, so we’d like find something on the West Side between Barnard/Columbia and the PATH train.

Hmm…new thought i hadn’t thought of when i spoke to you…why make a middle-distance commute? Only one of you should need a monthly metrocard, not both…

But oh how I’ll miss walking in and talking baseball with the guards and you coming to check your mail and looking, quizzically, saying “what are you doing here?!”

Good luck packing — that’s the worst part of moving. Unpacking can be fun, though…

Yay, congratulations! I went to school right up the street at the Manhattan School of Music — for 6.5 years — so I know the neighborhood well. You’ll love working up there, I think. As for new living locations that will be convenient for both of you, I would look at the south end of Hell’s Kitchen or the theater district. Does it have to be the PATH? There are some nice places near the Port Authority…can’t Jeff take a bus to Newark, wouldn’t that be just as easy? As long as you’re near the 1, you’ll be okay, though. Oh, GOD I’m having pangs of nostalgia right now. Get a place with a guestroom (or at least a futon) so I can come visit. Like, tomorrow.
