Gadget Lust

So what have I been doing lately instead of blogging? I’ve been suffering from some pretty intense gadget lust, anticipating the release of the new Palm Treo 650 (it’s a combination cellphone / Palm PDA).

I had got it into my head that I wanted to order an unlocked GSM Treo 650 (probably not available until Jan. or Feb. after Sprint’s initial lock on the supply of 650’s is up). So, to keep myself sane in the interim, I ordered a T-Mobile Sidekick II (currently free after rebate from Amazon). After a day or two of playing with it, I wasn’t happy with the UI or connection speed. I can think of a lot of people who’d be thrilled to use it, but not a power-user like me. So, back it went (thanks to T-Mobile’s 2 week trial period).

Next, I went to the Treo Road Show on Tuesday here in New York, and saw the new 650 demoed. I fell in love instantly and I fell hard. I immediately ordered a Sprint Treo 650 for the event’s special pricing of $350 (40% off the full price). But I was order #860-something and it will be a while before those order even start to ship.

Yestersday, the discussion board on TreoCentral (which I’ve been lurking on for months) revealed that the Treo had suddenly become available for immediate order and shipping for exisiting Sprint customers. Since my old Sprint cellphone is still active (even though I primarily use my work cellphone), I was able to call in this morning and order a 650 for full price (though I should be able to later get a $150 discount for signing up for a new 2-year contract). It should theoretically arrive tomorrow afternoon.

So now it’s even less likely I’ll be able to concentrate and get any work done today.

I had a cell phone about four years back, and liked it… but stopped using it. Now I’m back on the market, and want a cell that’ll sync properly with my Mac address, ical, all that stuff รขโ‚ฌโ€ and I want bluetooth. So it looks like the 650 is the way to go.

But I recently heard rumblings about Sprint (I’m pretty sure it’s Sprint) crippling a number of the features. Have you heard anything on that front?

Originally, Sprint was going to block the use of the Treo 650 for use a bluetooth modem (so you could surf the web on your laptop through the phone’s connection). Sprint reversed their position and an upcoming software update will reenable it.

Ah.

Cool. Thanks for the update.

Two things on a different note: what happened to the post that came across my RSS feed that was a follow-up to this one? And where’d the “remember me” option go?

I miss them both.

: )

Dude, I’ve had one of those things for months. I’ve been using it as a paperweight.
