Subway, a photographic essay by Bruce Davidson of the NYC subway system shot during the early 1980s, is being republished as the subway gets ready to turn 100.
Judging from photos in the book, I think I would have been too scared to ever ride the subway back then.
There seems to be something so quintessentially “NYC” in all those photos–the graffiti, the grungy-ness, the attitude. It’s awesome.

Seriuosly. I was watching some straight 80s porn set in a subway car and all I could think was “ew! I would never ride the subway if it still looked like that, much less copulate with a woman!”
