Hit or Miss

Why is it that my new Daily Crawl weblog monitoring script has recieved exactly one citation (is it too complicated?), while my TiVo scripts were visited like crazy even before I was ready to have them publically posted on my site? I’d really appreciate some help spreading the word about Daily Crawl

Okay, what the heck. I’ll try it.

Okay, I tried it. It’s neat! And it works … well, mostly. It doesn’t seem to indicate updates on certain weblogs that I know have updated (yours, for one). I must have something misconfigured … *tinker*.

The thing about the DAILY CRAWL script is that it has to run every hour (which is why cron is required), otherwise it will miss the notices of update. Second, it matches by url — the reason you’re probably not picking up my updates is because the url I send to weblogs.com is hitormiss.org and not the old hit-or-miss.org.

I’ve got cron running (and it emails me once an hour … eep), so that’s no problem. I’ll have to go through my list and make sure that I’ve got all the proper URLs for the individual pages. Thanks!

Oops! I left out a command in the cron.dailycrawl file to disable the email notices. I put up a new cron.dailycrawl that you can use (which is now part of the zipped download).

Thanks! Okay, I think I’ve got it working, pretty much. http://www.gumbopages.com/dailycrawl/ Expect your second citation soon. 🙂

I’ve modified Daily Crawl (adding a sidebar.cgi) to be able to include it (using SSI) in the sidebar of my index page. Credit and citation coming right up!
