LemonySnicket.com. Looking for a fun read to fill the time before the next Harry Potter book comes out, I happened upon the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” books, a series of mock-Gothic, Gorey-influenced books for kids featuring the intrepid Baudelaire children by the pseudonymous Lemony Snicket. The books are second only to the Harry Potter series on the Best Sellers lists.

Turns out the mysterious Mr. Snicket is actually author Daniel Handler, who claims to hate “children’s books” (“The idea that a bookworm boy would want to read about sports always cracked me up”).

I love those books! I’ve read the first three… and look forward to the rest. They’re a riot… but I must admit that I hope we get a new villain, soon.

I rather enjoyed Handler’s book The Basic Eight, which is an alarmingly cynical story about a murder in a group of opera-loving teens… snarky and funny and definitely worth checking out for, say, fans of the humor and pathos in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Heathers… It has a great twist at the end which makes a re-read even better. By the way, Handler can also be seen playing various instruments with the Magnetic Fields, those critical and indie darlings, and their assorted side projects.

So read the books if you like, but don’t let yourself sit around not listening to the recordings Mr. Snicket has created for books 2+ (book one not read by author but with a nifty little interview at the end).
