Why does DePauw get all the great speakers after I graduate? First, David Sedaris and Judy Shepard, now I find out they had Jane Elliott last year.
I saw the film of her blue-eyes/brown-eyes experiment in undergrad, which radically changed my viewpoints on racism and prejudice. None of the discrimination I’ve faced as a gay man even comes close to what people of color go through daily in this country — because I’m white and I can (and have) just blended into the majority to escape discovery.
Some of my SAs showed the documentary Blue-Eyed tonight, which follows Elliott’s transformation from school teacher into a diversity educator. Sadly, only one resident came to the program. This student body (made up primarily of rural/suburban Missourians) seems largely unconcerned with confronting their ignorance about diversity.
