Hit or Miss

In which Matt reflects on not hearing back from his parents after coming out to them It’s been around 5 days since I sent an email to my parents, coming out to them. I have yet to hear back from them. Of course, it’s common for us to go weeks without speaking and I don’t know how often they check their email.

I guess what is more important is that I finally worked up the courage to send them a message. Now the ball is in their court.

I feel like a great weight has been lifted off of me the past few days. But Bertie and Shannon keep asking me if I’m worried about what their response will be. I dunno – for some reason I really haven’t thought much about it.

I guess I’m realizing how much of an adult I’ve become and how independent and self-reliant I am. Not that I don’t care what they think, but for the first time I realize that my life is mine to live and who cares what they think. I’m finally getting over all the negative feedback I got from my parents about chucking my graduate work in Library and Information Science and pursuing Higher Education and Student Affairs instead. Sure, I won’t make as much money, but my happiness is so much more important.

Anyway, it’s been 5 days. In 3 weeks I’m supposed to move to Missouri and we had planned on my mom maybe coming up with her minivan to help me move. That may be the time I have to really talk to her in person about it. I’m not looking forward to that (that’s why I sent an email and didn’t call them).
