Y2K Evacuation Kit

My family’s new home in Soddy Daisy, TN is within the 5 mile radius of the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant.  A while ago, my mom recieved a year 2000 calendar from them, which included all the information about what to do in the case of a nuclear accident, including evacuation routes (We live in Section A3).  They recommend having potassium iodine tablets around the house, in case of radation exposure.

Well, suffice to say, all that scares the bejesus out of me.  I know that there haven’t been any major Y2K problems yet, but because there were some nuclear-related worries in Japan, I decided to put together an Evacuation Kit (just in case we have to evacuate and spend a few hours huddled in our zone’s evacuation location – a high school gym up north).

  • Palm IIIe / case
  • AAA batteries
  • pencil & paper
  • library booKs to read
  • Rio Mp3 player
  • aspirin
  • potassium iodine tablets
  • pudding cups / plastic spoon
  • change of clothes
  • toothbrush & toothpaste

It’s not a list of serious survival supplies, but hopefully it’ll keep me from getting bored if necessary.  Of course, my new Palm is on the top of the list – I composed this weblog entry on it!

Internet Withdrawal

I’m starting to go out of my mind being home for the holidays with my parents.  We have AOL here, but my parents don’t like me tying up the phone line for very long (even at night).  I can’t wait to return to school and my ethernet connection.  I’m really suffering from the inability to visit all the sites I normally check out everyday.

Thank goodness for my new Palm!  At least I have something to keep me occupied.

Y2Krazy no more!

I’ve been secretly worried the past few days.  I woke up the other morning and realized that I had neglected to test my server OPUS before leaving for Christmas Break to see it he will roll over correctly to the year 2000 (he’s an old cast-off Pentium 100).  So, I tried setting the date ahead and everything seemed to work okay.  I was actually most worried about the PERL script I had cobbled together for this weblog – but it showed my test 1-1-2000 entry without any problem.

Bubblet

Like Jen, of Whim and Vinegar, I got a Palm for Christmas and have been playing all sorts of addictive little games that completely miss the point of what the Palm was invented to do.  I read about this particular game in her weblog.

Name my Palm IIIe

I took the plunge and bought a Palm IIIe today.  Because I’ve named my Gateway desktop (Bessie) and my Linux server (Opus), I’d like to name my Palm – but I’ve only been able to think up some slightly obscene, inappropriate names so far.  Any ideas?

Last night I watched the end of this movie, Lying Eyes, on the Lifetime network with my mom and grandmom.  Basically, this slimely lawyer seduces an 18 year old cheerleader, Amy, who soon is stalked by a mysterious person.  Amy is convinced it is the man’s wife.  At the end, it turns out to be Amy’s friend (who was the man’s former lover), who tries to kill Amy by setting her car on fire.  Of course, the plan backfires and Amy has to save her friend’s life – then they’re the best of friends again!  Meanwhile, the slimey lawyer goes to another cheerleader practice to select a new target!

I could not believe what I was seeing.  Such an irresponsible, un-feminist movie – on the Lifetime network!??

New Sondheim Midis

I’m enjoying my free time over break.  So far, I’ve had time to sequence and post two Midi files by composer Stephen Sondheim: “There is No Other Way” from Pacific Overtures and “The Two of You” from Kulka, Fran, and Ollie.  I don’t have my nice midi keyboard here at home, so hopefully they sound correct.

What I want for Christmas

I have major Palm Pilot envy.  My Dad got a Palm IIIe the other day and I instantly fell in love when I played with it.  I’ve been reading up on them and I’m torn between buying for myself a IIIe (cheaper) or a IIIx (more expensive, but upgradable).

Winter Break

I’m finally finished with all my exams.  Just as soon as I get finished shoving all the undergrads out the door here at my dorm, I’ll be able to drive home myself.  My parents have moved to Chattanooga, so I’ll have to look at the map and figure out how to get there from Indiana tomorrow.

Updates will be fairly sporadic while I’m away.  I’m assuming that my server will stay up while I’m gone (unless the power goes out).
