Separation of Church and State
I’ve started attending Catholic mass regularly again this semester (at IU’s very gay-friendly campus church), but I continue to have problems with the greater Catholic Church in regards to it’s position on homosexuality. The Catholic churches of California have recently given over $300,000 to the Knight Initiative, a ballot proposal seeking to ban recognition of same-sex marriage. This greatly upsets me. It’s one thing for the Catholic Church to continue to treat gay men and women as second class citizens (though I know there are several progressive individual churches in America), but it’s quite another thing for it to try to actively influence US laws to withhold the right marriage to homosexuals.
